Beneath the surface of our crystal blue waters are some amazing sights, like the only living coral reef in the continental US, several famous sunken ships, vibrantly colored tropical fish, lush coral gardens and fascinating plant life. In 2009, a 1944 WWII warship was purposefully sunk, creating the world’s 2nd largest artificial reef – and making one of the world’s best dive sites. Swim with tropical fish, sea turtles, dolphins, and even a shark or two, as you navigate this deep-sea jungle-gym. Perfect for all skill levels, the USS Vandenberg sits 7 miles offshore. At its deepest, the ship sits in 140 feet of water while the top areas of the ship are in waters only 40 feet deep.

Alexander’s Wreck is a 300-foot Navy Destroyer escort which sank in 1972. The USS Amesbury was intended to serve as an artificial reef; however, she sank while en route to her planned destination. The Amesbury has become a home for an abundance of marine life. A popular and easy dive, this site offers a variety of aquatic life and the chance to explore deck guns and military artifacts.

Ten-Fathom Bar

Ten-Fathom Bar is one of the most dramatic dive sites in Key West. The drop begins at 25 feet and quickly drops to 130 feet, with the different depths showcasing a variety of marine life. The strong Gulf current around the drop off creates superb visibility, so have your waterproof camera ready – you’ll want to photograph the rare black coral and the giant, human-sized barrel sponges. The fish know this is a popular destination, so don’t be surprised if a friendly grouper approaches you for a treat!
